Hats, accessories and shells
Themost optional system in Otterly Lost is also the one players ask about most: dressing Otto up. Cosmetics became a proper system in the June 2026 demo update, and they carry into the full game.
Where cosmetics come from
| Source | Detail |
|---|---|
| Exploring | Accessories and quirky hats sit in the world, often behind a rock or a climb |
| Fishing | Some items are fished out of the sea rather than found on land |
| Shops | Cosmetics shops in the communities sell hats and accessories for shells |
| Trading | The local fisherman trades cosmetics, and takes what you dig or catch |
Cosmetics are mix-and-match: hats, accessories and other decorations can be worn in any combination, and the official site frames it as supporting "cute, classy, or maybe a little chaotic."
Shells are the budget
Shells are the game's only currency, and everything cosmetic competes with tool upgrades for the same pile. They come from broken shellrocks, sea urchins, crates, digging and shoreline pickups. Purchase dialogues display your shell total before you buy, and the demo's early cosmetics run around 40 shells.
What is not confirmed yet
- The full list of hats and accessories — the full game adds more, and none of it is published ahead of launch.
- Whether any cosmetic is missable. Nothing in the demo suggested a point of no return, and there is no quest timer in the game.
- Prices beyond the early demo items.
This page gets the complete list once the game is out and every source can be checked against the live build.
