Story and characters
Otterly Lost is built around a small cast of animals who each want something. This is who appears in the demo and the official material, and what they have actually said — the full game has been available since September 23. The entries below identify the earlier cast; new full-game characters and quest order are not implied by the demo list.
Otto
The player character: a curious sea otter swept away from home after "a mysterious event," according to the official description. Otto carries a Favorite Rock, uses tools rather than weapons, and is treated as a young otter by the older characters he meets.
Thalor
An ancient turtle and the first major NPC. Thalor explains that Otto drifted far from the mountain, talks about the keepers, and says the world's harmony has shifted — that the patterns no longer move as they should, and that traces of them appear across the sea. He hands over the humble stone that becomes the Favorite Rock and sets the sea salad quest that anchors the demo. His directions are deliberately geographical: ponds for lily pads, caves for lettuce, the coast for shoreberries.
Finding the lily pads (Thalor's sea salad)
The lily pads are where Thalor says they are. His first request — the sea salad that most demo players got stuck on — calls for 3 crunchy lily pads, 6 leaves of tender cave lettuce and 13 ripe shoreberries, and his directions are deliberately geographical: ponds for the lily pads, caves for the lettuce, the coast for the berries.
Captain Snipkin
A shipwrecked captain living in a workshop out on the water. His ship went belly up in a storm, and he lost his trinkets, his maps and his family pendant. He is one of the demo's best-known characters, partly because his requests open up the trading and shop side of the game.
Daisy
An NPC connected to a puzzle — the demo patch notes mention improving the interaction radius for Daisy's puzzle — and to a missing item that another character blames on her.
The neighbours
| Character | Role in the demo |
|---|---|
| The goat climber | A climbing NPC whose gear features in the climbing canyon; fixed in demo patches |
| Murkle, Ribberto, Wenna | Residents with dialogue and journal entries |
| The fisherfrog | Takes what you dig up and trades cosmetics and shells |
| The piratey crab | Hands over the spade that starts the digging chain |
| The frog singer | An aspiring singer mentioned on the official site as someone you help |
The story so far
The demo is explicit that Otto's journey is not random: something changed in the world, the keepers know about it, and the sea is full of imbalance patterns and strange piles of dirt that mark where it happened. Press hands-on coverage from the demo period describes four tablets that guide the world and were lost in an earthquake — treat that as reported detail rather than confirmed lore until the full game repeats it.
What is confirmed is the shape of the arc: Otto was taken from home by an event, the animals he meets are all affected by it, and reaching home means dealing with the cause rather than just travelling there.

Continue a character quest after v1.0.1
A missing Paw Button or Egg can be a shrine bug rather than a missed conversation. On v1.0.1, revisit the original pickup spot and recover the item on your existing full-game save, then return to the quest. Do this before replaying every NPC dialogue or starting over. The fix does not claim to change the sea-salad quantities or every character's quest prerequisites.
If you have already become a Keeper, revisiting the Fountain of Balance should no longer start the ending again. That repeated sequence was also fixed in v1.0.1; it is not a second story quest to complete.
