Otterly Lost Guide

Beginner guide: controls and first hour

Otterly Lost does not punish you, but it does let you wander. This page covers the controls, the first tools and the handful of habits that stop the opening hour from turning into a swim in circles.

Controls

The demo supports keyboard and mouse plus full controller support, and the controls menu includes camera and zoom sensitivity along with remapping. Defaults seen in the demo build:

ActionKeyboardController
Swim / moveW A S Dleft stick
Dive below the surfaceCtrlB / circle
Jump, climb, glideSpaceA / cross
Use tool (rock, dig, cut)interact promptX / square
Open the mapMmap button
Open your pocket (inventory)Tabinventory button

If a key does not feel right, rebind it — the menu remembers the change, and tool selection is contextual, so you rarely have to pick a tool mid-swim.

Your first hour

  1. Follow Thalor's directions before exploring. He hands over the Favorite Rock and the first quest, and everything else early on is downstream of it.
  2. Smash everything you can reach. Shellrocks, sea urchins and crates drop shells and materials, and the rock lets you keep moving while you swing it.
  3. Float to rest. Surfacing costs nothing, so use the surface as a safe lane between islands instead of fighting current underwater.
  4. Open the map often. Landmarks only appear once you have found them, so a new icon means something nearby is worth a second look.
  5. Collect salad ingredients while you travel. Lily pads in still ponds, cave lettuce in underwater caves, shoreberries along the coast — gathering them on the way saves a dedicated trip back.

Shells and the pocket

Shells are money. They drop from breakables, sit on the shore, and are paid to shops and traders. Your pocket holds the rock, tools, accessories, collectibles and a camera, and purchase dialogues show your shell total before you commit.

Habits that pay off later

  • Talk to the animals twice. Several NPCs add dialogue after a quest ends, and some of it points at places the map does not mark.
  • Remember where ponds and caves are. The ingredients for Thalor's quest come from three different terrain types, and later requests reuse them.
  • Do not skip accessories. Cosmetics come from exploring, fishing and shops, and mixing what you own is free.
  • Upgrade abilities at every station you find. Swim speed, jump height, climbing and gliding all improve, and the demo's first real upgrade sits near the shipwreck.
